Re: 17EDR Side Crash Complete recording- NO PRE-CRASH
Looking through other 17EDR files, I found an example where the side only TRGs did not have pre-crash data, but the front/side/rear TRGs do have pre-crash. Perhaps, the idea was that the pre-crash would be included in the front/side/rear record, and would be duplicated in the side-only record? Bob A...

Re: QUESTION: Positive Sign on Delta-V
Newton's 2nd Law can be expressed as: F = m * delta-v/delta-t Assuming that mass and delta-t are relatively constant, you can see that Force and delta-V are proportional and have the same sign or polarity. So, if the forward direction is positive. Then, a positive delta-V corresponds with an impact ...

Re: edr readings on ice
Good Morning, The reliability of EDR data is well established and admissible in criminal litigation where the standard is beyond a reasonable doubt. This reliability has been established by comparing known crash and pre-crash conditions to that recorded by the EDR, including "suboptimal" r...

Re: Crush measuring when damaged part is removed
NHTSA's lack of a G37 in their model list indicates to me that that platform has been tested under another model and/or brand. Back in the day, such sisters and clones vehicles were evident in the Mitchell Collision Estimating Guide indexes, as they would have the same Body Codes. Now-a-days, you ma...

SATAI 2023, March 2-3
This e-mail is an invitation to attend the upcoming SATAI crash conference in Glendale, Arizona. This year’s crash program will feature remote driven vehicles using the Phantom Driver, anthropomorphic test devices (crash dummies), and EDR supported vehicles for manufacturers, such as Honda and Mazda...

Re: 2011 Nissan Frontier - EDR Image
Good Morning, Our contact with Nissan North America is through their legal department. They are not obligated to provide EDR services and that is not their business, rather it takes resources away from their business. As such, they have arranged it so that EDR data is obtainable while minimizing the...

Re: LEXUS 17EDR Ignition Cycle vs Trip Count
Yes.
The trip count reported in the vehicle control history is almost always observed to be different than the ignition cycle count reported in the EDR report.
Evidently, there are separate counters for ignition cycles and trips.

Re: 2017 Chevy Corvette Dynamic Event Counter
In the same way, those vehicles that are used for off-roading can have much higher than normal number of non-deployment events, (high TRG# in a 4x4 Tacoma for example) I would expect that a Corvette could accumulate a higher than expected number of events, if hard cornering, for example, could set a...

Re: "Lifetime Operating Timer at Event Time Zero (sec)"
Hi Mary, With the exception of some of the newest cars, in general automobiles do not know what day or time it is. Most automobiles keep "time" in terms of the number of times the vehicle is powered up and down (ignition cycles) or odometer reading. The number of seconds the vehicle has be...

Re: Help File for SmartPhone anyone?
This is covered in the current version of the CDR Technician class. It goes something like this: Download a CHM reader to your phone. Put a copy of the help file on your phone. Use the CHM reader program to view the help file. Maintenance: remember to update the help file on you phone with each new ...

Re: Red shoe, black scuff?
Many plastics change color when deformed.
The best way to answer your question is to take an exemplar shoe and grind off some material to see what the material that is ground off looks like.

Re: 2012 Kia EDR "wakeup" (SPLIT TOPIC)
Aaron, The 2012 Kia will be pre- part 563 and therefore may or may not have the 5 mph Delta V within 150 msec requirement for a recording. Unfortunately, there has not been much low speed testing on these unsupported vehicles. I would point out that in the Vandiver paper (SAE 2015-01-1445) an event ...

Julia, In your daughter's crash, it appears that her Opel turned left across the Audi's path and I suspect that is what the insurer has concluded. I am only familiar with our traffic rules, so I don't know if it makes any difference if the Audi was traveling over the center line. Are you asking if t...

Re: Can the responsibility be determined from these pictures
Unfortunately, the majority of the time vehicle damage can only tell you how the vehicles were oriented relative to each other at the time of contact and not their location on the roadway. Physical evidence, such as tire marks and debris, or electronic evidence, such as dash cams or surveillance vid...

Brent, Only 2013 and newer Hyundai/Kia airbag control modules (ACM's) are officially supported for retrieving crash related data. Your 2010 Kia Soul most likely recorded an crash related event, but using the newer tool to retrieve a copy of that data can be called into question because it is not kno...

Please Help! In desperate need for a reconstruction analysis opinion.
Brent, It seems undisputed that the Toyota was attempting to turn right. Indeed, the vehicle photographs show that this was an angled impact in which the Kia's central right front struck the Toyota's right rear corner. The skid marks appear to be post-impact tire marks. Matching those up to the tire...

Re: Minor Traffic Accident... Fault Determination?
J, Looking at the video a few times, it appears that either the car moves into the right rear of your SUV, or in response to the right rear of your SUV catching it as you turn. Either way, its clear that you were at the intersection first, which perhaps weighs against the other driver's credibility....

The question that you are really posing is: at what point in time or distance would it have been reasonable for the Plymouth driver to recognize the situation as one that would require an evasive maneuver. It is really fair to say that a reasonable driver would be begin to brake when a pedestrian en...
