1) do the 2011 Honda Civics have a black box
2) does software exist that allows for data retrieval?
3) if yes, do the airbags have to be deployed for data to be retrievable
4) if data can be retrieved and airbags do not deploy but there is a rear impact collision, will that collision allow for data to be retrieved?

Re: CDR on 2011 honda civic
"Black box..." meaning the capability to record data after a crash using the "Event Data Recorder" functionality in the airbag control module? The answer is...probably. The airbag control module in the 2012 model IS accessible using the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval Tool but the 2011 is not. The 2011 mpodel is not covered by 49CFR563 and not supported for access by the CDR Tool so ...hondacivic wrote:1) do the 2011 Honda Civics have a black box
...IF there is data recorded in that airbag control module it would be accessible through Honda; they would have to arrange for its retrieval.hondacivic wrote:2) does software exist that allows for data retrieval?
Although there's no guarantee that there is data in the 2011 Civic, most systems (the 2012 Civic in particular) will record "non-deployments;" however, they have to reach a certain level of severity (delta-V) before they record when there's not a deployment.hondacivic wrote:3) if yes, do the airbags have to be deployed for data to be retrievable
Maybe. Staying with Honda systems for 2012, the "Data Limitations" reads:hondacivic wrote:4) if data can be retrieved and airbags do not deploy but there is a rear impact collision, will that collision allow for data to be retrieved?
Again, this is for the 2012 Civic; but, for that system, it doesn't call for front-to-rear where it says, simply, "longitudinal" (although the recording threshold delta-V is specified) and provides for events specified from basically all normal difections including "rear."Data for front, side, rear and rollover events can be recorded as either non-deployment or deployment events. Both types of events can contain pre-crash and crash data.- A non-deployment event is recorded if the change in longitudinal or lateral velocity equals or exceeds 8km/h over a 150ms timeframe or another type of non-reversible deployable restraint device other than a front, side, or side curtain airbag (e.g. seatbelt pretensioner) is commanded to deploy. (emphasis added)
While there's no guarantee that such data would exist in the 2011, there's the possibility, BUT, it has to be arranged through Honda.
