http://www.detroitnews.com/article/2013 ... bag-defectWashington — Honda Motor Co. said Thursday it will recall 374,000 Honda minivans and SUVs to address reports of inadvertent airbag deployments — the third major recall over the suspect part across the auto industry.
The Japanese automaker said the airbag system will be repaired in 318,000 2003-04 Honda Odyssey minivans and 56,000 2003 Acura MDX SUVs to address potential malfunctions of the Supplemental Restraint System airbag system. To prevent electrical interference, an electrical noise filter will be installed adjacent to the SRS control unit.
Honda has received a small but increasing number of complaints in recent months of inadvertent airbag deployment in these vehicles, which are equipped with SRS control units that contain computer chips similar to those used in airbag system control units installed in other manufacturers' vehicles that were recalled in the last year. No crashes have been reported to Honda related to this issue.
In June, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the 2003-04 Odyssey after receiving six complaints from owners alleging their frontal air bags suddenly deployed without a crash. Three of the six owners also alleged they sustained injury from the incidents. All six owners stated their vehicles were being operated on the roadway when the air bag deployment occurred. In addition, NHTSA received another 41 consumer complaints alleging the vehicle's air bag warning light illuminated.
NHTSA said during a 2012 investigation of inadvertent air bag deployments in Chrysler Group products, the electronic air bag module supplier reported that certain MY 2003-04 Honda Odyssey vehicles use the same application-specific integrated circuit component within the airbag control module. In the Chrysler investigation, the circuit was determined to fail due to an electrical over stress condition resulting in an inadvertent air bag deployment.
Chrysler recalled about 750,000 vehicles in the United States to address the same issue, including its 2002-03 Jeep Liberty and 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It also recalled about 160,000 outside the U.S. to address the same problem.
In January, Toyota Motor Corp. recalled 1.3 million vehicles worldwide, including 887,000 vehicles in the United States to address the same air bag issue from the same supplier — the 2003-04 Corolla and Corolla Matrix and 2003-04 Pontiac Vibe, which was jointly assembled with General Motors.
