MILWAUKEE —A car flew off a Milwaukee viaduct last week, and now, police have a search warrant to access the car's airbag control module.

Lorraine Ivory said it was like a movie stunt right before her eyes. "It kind of felt surreal almost," Ivory said. As she was walking into her home on Feb. 26, she heard a loud noise coming from the 35th Street viaduct up above. "I don't know, I just looked up, and I saw the car falling from the sky," Ivory said.

Police said the car went 145 feet through the air and dropped nearly 50 feet onto the basketball court below. According to a search warrant, the driver, a 31-year-old woman, and her passenger, a 24-year-old man, don't remember what happened.

So police want to take a look at the airbag control module, which is similar to a black box on an airplane. "They record all kinds of crash information, vehicle speed, if the brake pedal was deployed," said Bill Zoesch of Crystal Auto Body. Zoesch said it's like a small computer found in the center console or under the dash and triggers the airbags to deploy.

Then special diagnostic equipment can pull up the data. Not only will that airbag control module help investigators figure out how the crash happened, but it could determine if any criminal charges will be filed. For now, the crash remains a mystery and police said they won't be commenting until the district attorney reviews the case. Both people in the car survived the crash. WISN 12 News checked with Froedtert Hospital which said the passenger is still in the hospital in satisfactory condition. The driver is out of the hospital.
