Detroit Free Press: "Chrysler recalls 184,215 SUVs to fix airbag controller"

Chrysler said today it is recalling an estimated 184,215 SUVs globally to replace a component that manages air-bag deployments.

It is the same issue that caused Ford to recall 850,000 cars and SUVs in September.

Chrysler said airbag control modules in some — but not all — 2014 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs may indicate that the module has short-circuited.

That could cause the air-bag warning lights to turn on, warning occupants that the air bags and seat-belt pretensioners are disabled.

The Auburn Hills automaker said it is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

Affected customers will be contacted by Chrysler and the problem will be repaired for free by dealers. Dealers will install a new occupant restraint control module.

Customers with questions may call Chrysler Group's Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Chrysler did not say how much the repairs will cost the company.

Ford said in September it will cost about $500 million to fix the 850,000 cars and SUVs it is recalling for the same issue. Ford's recall costs, along with expected losses in Europe and South America, caused its stock to fall.
