CANplus or Alternatives
I have previously used CDR data in investigations but that data was always pulled by others. I was wanting to equip myself to be able to do it independently. Yesterday I, rather surprisingly, learned that a huge number of vehicles (more than half I'm guessing) can only be accessed using the CANplus module. However, the CANplus was discontinued by Bosch in October of last year and they are not commercially available any longer. So, what is one to do??? Are there any suggestions on where I could find a used CANplus or is anyone aware of any hardware systems from other vendors that may cover this gap?

That's not entirely true. After you had technician training you'd find that most vehicles in the Bosch Help file are now CANPlus OR CDR 900 and, as Bill Rose told us at the EDR Summit in Houston, they're moving to make all the systems CDR 900 in the CDR 2 program. No other vendor makes a system like this. You should contact Crash Data Group for sales and then get properly trained to use the system.

Re: CANplus or Alternatives
@Hebert, thanks for the reply. I must be missing something. I'm looking at the v24 vehicle list here: https://cdr.boschdiagnostics.com/cdr/si ... R1_0_0.pdf and I count 2695 vehicles that use CANplus only, 1321 that use CDN 900 only, and 1260 that can use either (total of 5276 supported vehicles). CANPlus supports 75% and CDR900 supports 49%. I called Crash Data Group support to confirm that I was reading the vehicle list correctly and they confirmed it. What am I missing here?

Or you can say that of 5276 listed vehicles, from which there's no breakdown of the different module types - which is really what's important, not the vehicles - about 49% can be accessed using CDR 900 right now assuming you're looking at a v24.x coverage list) and, of the larger total, considering 2012 and newer for which 49CFR563 applies, the percentage is even higher especially since some vehicles have more than one accessible module and newer modules and those new systems introduced going forward are ONLY going to be CDR 900 accessible.
Habert is right, this year, as Bosch moves to what Bill Rose called the "One CDR" project, that percentage will shift dramatically in favor of CDR 900. In the meantime, IF one were to need CANPlus, Crash Data Group has some on hand to rent. But over the coming couple years, more and more systems will drop the "or" designation and be CDR 900 only as CDR2 requires CDR 900 and won't support CANPlus. Older systems may still be accessible using the CAN Plus and legacy software.

Thanks Rusty. That makes sense. I checked Crash Data Group's rental website and didn't see a CANPlus, but I will give them a call. It's disappointing that there is such a big gap for someone who is trying to build a complete kit now.

Re: CANplus or Alternatives
I have the same concern about not having access to a canplus. Crash Data Group does not have them for rent. They told me yesterday (7-6-2024) they are working on a deal with Bosch to be able to rent them. Until that deal is worked out, there are thousands of vehicles we can’t download, including 2013 Chevy Malibu, which I had opportunity to download yesterday. I noticed all the 2013 Checy’s required canPlus. We are just out of the loop until Bosch moves vehicles over to the CDR 900… or the canPlus becomes available to rent.
