Rivian R1

Post by tech4cars »

I just received a request to investigate a Rivian R1 impact, my first Rivian inquiry. Rivian does not have a traditional EDR module or support the CDR tool that I'm aware of, but does capture onboard data, similar to Tesla Car Log Data. Has anyone requested and/or received such data from Rivian, and is it similar in format (.csv or spreadsheet data) similar to the Tesla Car Log Data? Also, does anyone know if Rivian captures video or still images? Any insight is appreciated.

Word on the street is that while Rivian has EDR capability, their vehicles weigh enough to be exempt from Part 563 and therefore they are exempt from the requirement to have a commercially available EDR tool. It has been suggested that since the next two models would be under the GVWR exemption, a tool may be on the horizon.

Personally I've not seen anything from Rivian (or Lucid for that matter), but a retired officer stated that he had seen a download, which came in both word and pdf formats and had an associated video file. He did not have a contact at Rivian. He felt that Rivian would cooperate with LE, but he was unsure how much success those on the civil side would have.

Good luck and have fun, and please report back your experience.

Thanks for the info and reply. I've also learned a bit more since then. Rivian has provided some info/data responsive to the owner's data privacy request. I haven't seen it yet personally, but have been told it is not intelligible in its present format, and there are no Rivian tools or other support available at this point. There is speculation that the data is a collection of CAN bus messages that occurred around the time of the impact. But, without a Rivian CAN dbc file, decoding it may be an extensive undertaking?

Coincidentally, I just received an inquiry today on a VinFast crash. Their website makes no mention at all about CDR/EDR support, and they are not listed as supported by Crash Data Group. They do claim to log data and camera images, but have no privacy request or information at all on their website about impact data. I'll be putting another post on the Forum shortly to see if anyone out there has info about VinFast as well.

Also, BTW, LUCID is listed as supported by Bosch/CrashDataGroup. A direct to module cable is listed for LUCID.

Straight from Rivian's website:

How do I access data on my Event Data Recorder?

In the event of a collision, data may be recorded on the vehicle’s Event Data Recorder, which is a sort of “black box” that is physically located on the vehicle. Rivian does not access this data without explicit customer consent.

To access your own EDR data following a collision, please reach out to Rivian Service and request a mobile service visit for this purpose.

Due to our vehicles’ weight classification, we do not provide a commercially available tool for retrieving or interpreting EDR data.

Members of law enforcement should see our guidance on Law Enforcement Data Requests.

Legal representatives should see our guidance on Civil Service of Process and Third-Party Data Requests.

Apparently with the Connect+ subscription, videos from Rivian vehicles is also possible.
